The Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery is comprised of three fellowship trained orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons and currently supports a PGY-4 and PGY-2 resident who rotate in 10-12 week blocks, as well as rotating podiatry residents. The division is active in medical student education providing clinical rotations for third and fourth year medical students. The service provides care at UCMC, Holmes and Westchester Hospital as well as its Ambulatory Surgery Center. Foot and ankle care is also a part of the VA rotation. This is the newest division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, which was started to meet the increasing need for reconstruction of the foot and ankle. In this capacity, the division interacts with divisions of sports medicine, trauma and adult reconstruction in addition to providing care for congenital deformity as these children become adults. The Division is developing a regional referral practice with expertise in fractures, deformity and degenerative conditions involving the foot and ankle, including joint replacement and joint restoration/preservation. This division is also working with the division of podiatry in the Department of Surgery to collaborate on mutual projects for education and research.
The division provides weekly case conferences for the residents on the service and provides monthly conferences for the entire department. In addition, the division has been active in the CSI lab to develop motor skills and enhance surgical experience (on both cadavers and saw bone models). The faculty regularly participate in regional and national meetings as presenters and educators.
Faculty of the Foot and Ankle Division consist of Tonya Dixon, MD; Richard Laughlin, MD and Robert Raines, MD.
