The Multiple Sclerosis Division works through the UC Waddell Center for Multiple Sclerosis of the UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute, a comprehensive and rapidly developing center that solely focuses on multiple sclerosis care in Greater Cincinnati. The center is recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as the regional referral center in the Tristate and has been recognized by the Ohio Valley chapter of the National MS Society as a “Partner of Care” and is working with this center closely to provide excellent care for patients with MS.
Education plays a very important role at the Waddell Center. Residents and medical students come to the center for expert training. Didactic lectures for advancing knowledge in multiple sclerosis are provided as well. Developing an MS fellowship program is one of the center’s main academic goals as the program grows.
All Waddell Center physicians have advanced training in MS and neuroimmunology. These physician-scientists focus their clinical skills and research interests solely on MS and related disorders, including neuromyelitis optica, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, neurosarcoidosis, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome and other disorders that can mimic MS like B12 deficiency, Migraine, stroke and TIA.
Our physicians have advanced training in MS/neuroimmunology. Because of their comprehensive knowledge in the MS field, they have a deeper understanding of the harmful mechanisms (both inflammatory and degenerative) that underlie the development of MS and how to manage the disease and its disabilities. This comprehensive knowledge optimizes treatment for individual patients with MS.
The Waddell Center in conjunction with the UC Department of Internal Medicine Division of Hematology Oncology provides a state-of-the-art infusion center for Nalizumab, Rituximab, Ocrelizumab and other monoclonal antibody infusions which are used in the treatment of MS. First dose observation for patients who take Fingolimod is also done in house.
The UC Waddell Center for Multiple Sclerosis clinicians and scientists integrate comprehensive, state-of-the-art clinical care for MS patients with innovative clinical trials. The Waddell Center for Multiple Sclerosis is involved in multiple clinical trials in relapsing remitting MS and is one of the leading recruiters for a clinical trial in progressive patients with MS sponsored by the NIH.
