Eligibility: All undergraduate students who can illustrate interest in neurotrauma research are eligible to apply.

Position Type: The selected Fellow will be expected to work 30 - 40 hours a week for 8 - 10 weeks in a laboratory setting. The Fellow will receive a stipend.

Description: The Translational Neurotrauma Laboratory in the UC Department of Neurosurgery is offers an Undergraduate Neurotrauma Summer Research Fellowship. The Fellow will work in Dr. Laura Ngwenya's lab conducting experiments using a rodent model of traumatic brain injury. Successful candidates will demonstrate an excellent academic record, are self-motivated and well organized, and have an interest in neurosurgery and neurotrauma.

Neuroscience MSSP Description (2023)

Note: Neurosurgery participation in the Neuroscience MSSP Program will be limited to the Endovascular Division. Students interested in working with other Divisions in the Department are encouraged to apply to the Neurosurgery MSSRP which includes the option to work with any Division.

Eligibility: All University of Cincinnati M1 students entering their first summer may apply.

Position Type: 3 month position. Stipend is $3,000 paid in 2 installments (mid-June and end of summer.) Students will also have $1,500 available for presenting research (eg. travel, printing materials, etc.)

1. Contact potential faculty mentors.
2. Work with selected faculty mentor to develop a project proposal.
3. Complete the CommonApp (required documents include CV, completed proposal, and personal statements.)

Timeline: July 1 – June 30

Eligibility: All M3 medical students who are applying to Neurosurgery Residency programs. International students are not eligible.

Position Type: 12 – month, full-time. Funding may be available and is dependent on Departmental budget.

Description: The Department of Neurosurgery’s Research Gap Year program is intended for medical students finishing their 3^rd year to carry out research projects and generate publications to expand their CVs to make them more competitive when applying to Neurosurgery residency programs. These programs are placing increasing importance on research and publications as a factor in determining successful applicants.

In this position, participants will have the opportunity to be a part of a number of research projects in the Department. These projects span database and retrospective studies, clinical trials, data science studies, and basic science laboratory work. The Gap Year Fellow will be involved in a wide variety of projects, ideally leading to multiple publications and presentations at research meetings.

The Fellow will be responsible for maintaining excellent departmental research citizenship by actively participating in Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, Research Division Meetings, local and national meetings, among other activities.

The ideal candidate is committed to Neurosurgery as a career, dedicated to a full year of research, highly self-motivated, able to work under conditions of varying supervision, flexible, and have an exemplary academic record.
