Academic Program Overview
The training programs in Epidemiology stress environmental, clinical, molecular, genetic, quantitative, and community epidemiology. Students are provided with the tools to plan and execute studies of various designs as well as analyze and interpret the results of their investigations. Students also have the opportunity to take courses in many of the various subspecialties of epidemiology such as cancer, cardiovascular, infectious disease, pharmacological, pediatric, and neurological. Courses are also available in other departments in the College of Medicine that can provide students with a further understanding of the basic biological processes underlying human disease. Students are strongly encouraged to apply their training to ongoing research projects conducted by departmental faculty, faculty from other clinical departments in the College of Medicine, and clinical researchers working in affiliated health care institutions.
Master of Science in Epidemiology
Program Summary
While the Master’s and Doctoral programs are similar in a number of respects, we regard the Master’s program as an apprenticeship to the field as research support staff. Both the MS and PhD programs require
that students propose and execute original studies that test hypotheses concerning risk factors for disease and/or approaches to disease prevention.
Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology
Program Summary
While the Master’s and Doctoral programs are similar in a number of respects, we regard the Doctoral program as an induction into the field as an expert and independent investigator who can plan and manage large-scale
human clinical studies. Both the MS and PhD programs require that students propose and execute original studies that test hypotheses concerning risk factors for disease and/or approaches to disease prevention.
Master of Science in Clinical & Translational Research
Principal Investigator (PI) Track
The Master of Science degree program in Clinical & Translational Research - Principal Investigator track is designed to provide clinical professionals (physicians, nurses and other terminal degree
clinical professionals) with the necessary preparation for successful career development and independent investigator awards. The program emphasizes specific training in clinical epidemiology/clinical effectiveness, molecular epidemiology, clinical
trials, and translational research that will enable clinicians to translate scientific advances into applications for improved clinical practice and human health. The disciplinary purpose and ultimate goal of the program is to move practitioners from
the realm of personal clinical experience to objective evidence.
Clinical Research Professionals (CRP) Track
The Master of Science in Clinical & Translational Research - Clinical Research Professionals track is designed specifically for clinical research professionals who coordinate, manage,
and lead collaborative research projects and clinical trials.
The program provides a strong foundation in research methodology and program/project management, including training in research ethics and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process. The disciplinary purpose and ultimate goal of the program is to provide clinical professionals with the necessary preparation for successful careers in clinical research.
Certificate in Clinical & Translational Research
Program Summary
The Certificate is a 10 credit hour program designed to provide an introduction to clinical and translational research. Most classes can be completed in one 8-week summer session or in one academic year.
Molecular Epidemiology in Children's Environmental Health Training Program (MECEH)
Program Summary/Overview
This training program is an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary program in Molecular Epidemiology in Children’s Environmental Health (MECEH). Participating faculty are from the departments of Environmental
and Public Health Sciences, Pediatrics and Molecular Genetics. The focus of MECEH program is to identify outstanding predoctoral, resident/fellow MDs and postdoctoral PhDs and equip each with the knowledge and skills to undertake epidemiological and
clinical studies using molecular markers of exposure, effect and susceptibility.
