Chair's Welcome

Image of Adam KaufmanGreetings and welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati. Our recent Academic Services agreement with the Cincinnati Eye Institute has created a world-class clinical, research and teaching program that continues as the preeminent ophthalmic services provider in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Tristate region.

Our clinical faculty has achieved national and international prominence in the fields of cataract and anterior segment surgery, oculoplastics, optics, pediatric ophthalmology, ocular oncology, corneal disease and neuro-ophthalmology.

Our faculty members also have diverse research interests, and their clinical and basic science investigations regularly yield findings and observations that advance the science and art of ophthalmology and lead to improved patient care. Our newly formed Translational Research Group is fostering collaboration between basic and clinical science researchers at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Cincinnati Eye institute in the area of Regenerative Medicine: Cell and Gene Therapy.

Our three-year ophthalmology residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residents experience a rich and diverse education as training includes their own resident continuing care clinic, University Hospital inpatients, Veterans Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Cincinnati Eye Institute. This provides experience with virtually all forms of ophthalmic practice. This training also extends to medical students and subspecialties within ophthalmology. We currently have fellowship training in retina, cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology, ocular oncology and neuro-ophthalmology.

We have a new quarterly newsletter aimed at keeping our friends updated with the latest departmental happenings. Our Current Newsletter (PDF) is available here. If you would like to receive the hard copy newsletter, please contact Michele Wyan, Michele.wyan@uc.edu.
