Second look at Cincinnati

Greetings #FutureMedCats!  We are in the process of confirming details for the 2021 Second Look @ Cincinnati Medicine program!  Please check back after the new year for further details and exact dates.  In the interim, head over to our Instagram account @Cincinnati_Medicine to view photos from previous years' programs!

A brief snapshot of activities to expect in the 2021 program include:

  • Interactive workshops run by esteemed and collaborative Cincinnati Medicine faculty
  • Tours of our academic health center hospitals that make up one of the nation’s most consolidated academic health centers
  • Student panels who are eager to welcome you to their community
  • A Financial Aid overview of important dates, deadlines, and helpful tips
  • Understanding how Cincinnati Medicine will prepare you to be an outstanding clinician and leader in academic medicine
  • Learning about service opportunities (international and domestic) where you will be able to lend a helping hand and make a difference
  • Hearing from our alums about their experiences at Cincinnati Medicine and what it’s like to be a practicing physician beyond medical school
  • “Researching” our research and hearing about ways to tap into premier research at Cincinnati Medicine
  • Opportunities to explore our Queen City with your future classmates

The event typically begins on a Friday morning and will conclude on Saturday afternoon.  With the remainder of the day free, take some time to explore the place that you will soon call home!  Check out some of our suggestions below.

Post-Brunch Activities

Open year round, Krohn Conservatory is a nationally recognized showcase of more than 3,500 plant species from all over the world.  Once you get your fill of Krohn’s annual Monarch Butterfly Show, taking place from now until June, hop over for some scenic city views at the edge of Eden Park.

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is the second-oldest and ranked as the third best zoo in the nation. Stroll through the botanical gardens and catch Zoo Blooms this month (Zoo babies, next month!). Perhaps you’ll even get a chance to view Fiona, the new baby hippo that’s all the craze here in Cincinnati (seriously, follow her on Instagram – she may need to be the back-up mascot to our beloved Bearcat!).

At the heart of most metropolitan cities is a fountain, but are these fountains built on an old Indian mound?  And do they  pump five  hundred gallons of water every minute?  Well, probably the latter but definitely not the former.  Either way Cincinnati natives take advantage of  the beauty of Fountain Square and the fun activities that surround it each day.

Need a little down time after Second Look?  Take a relaxing stroll through the gardens, walkways and playgrounds of Smale Riverfront Park, the newest of Cincinnati’s top ranked parks. It's located downtown along the Ohio River.  Stop to play some life sized checkers or take a swing in the flying pig.

Are you an art lover?  Nestled in the heart of downtown, the name speaks for itself.  You won't be disappointed by the modern works of art... and the best part: admission to this Cincinnati activity is FREE!!!

Tour the Queen City

Recently ranked as the best walking city in Ohio, Cincinnati’s walking tour hits many of the historical gems, local landmarks, and visitor highlights of Downtown Cincinnati. It also offers a great glimpse of the variety of Downtown architecture and our unique take on the urban form.

While this food tour may not hit the downtown hotspots such as Sotto, Salazar and Boca, recently highlighted on Yahoo Food, you’re still guaranteed to get some tasty treats.  Feel your tastebuds rejoice as you learn fun and historic facts about the Queen City.

Learn about Cincinnati’s hidden history on one of the Top Five Underground Tours in the U.S.. Enjoy a stroll through Over-the-Rhine, home to America’s largest set of historical landmarks. Visit buildings in the Gateway District that were home to over 130 saloons, bars and beer gardens, and theaters that hosted the iconic entertainers like Buffalo Bill Cody. Then, descend below the city streets to a hidden crypt where some of Cincinnati’s first residents were buried. Next return underground to explore newly discovered tunnels vital to Cincinnati’s brewery heritage.

Cincinnati is known for its German heritage (after all, we have the second largest Oktoberfest in the world outside of Munich), therefore it’s fitting that a city-wide brewery tour ranks among top activities to do within the city.  Find out why the Queen City ranks nationally as a Best City of Beer Drinkers (SmartAsset, 2016).

The Pedal Wagon is a 15 person, pedal powered, rolling party. You can reserve the entire Pedal Wagon, or just part of it. Choose from a variety of routes, on which you will share a memorable experience with friends, while uncovering Cincinnati’s rich history, and “best kept secret” local establishments on pub crawls, tours of the city’s historic districts and breweries, and more.

By the end of the two days, our goal is for you to reaffirm your decision to pursue a career in medicine in Cincinnati!

See you soon...and Go MedCats!
