Cincinnati Medicine

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM), was the founding institution for the larger University of Cincinnati in 1819. As the second oldest medical school in the nation, we’ve innovated from the start. We changed the face of medicine with the first teaching hospital in the nation thanks to the revolutionary vision of our founder, Dr. Daniel Drake. We also claim the nation’s first: medical laser laboratory, emergency medicine residency, and oral polio vaccine. But the “firsts” do not stop there. Recently, we established the first-of-its-kind Center for Surgical Innovation, a collaboration between surgery, biomedical engineering, emergency medicine, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

UCCOM itself is located within Cincinnati’s Academic Health Center (AHC). Our nationally ranked AHC facilities are among the largest single site health campuses in the US, with most clinical and research sites located within 0.5 mile radius of UCCOM including the region’s only level-one trauma center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (130 years old and ranked No. 3 in the nation!). Across the street is Cincinnati’s VA (recently ranked in the top 10 VA hospitals in the nation) and Shriner’s Hospital for Children (one of only four freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated to treating burns and plastic & reconstructive surgery). Close by you’ll access Christ Hospital, a national leader in cardiac surgical care, and Good Samaritan Hospital, our oldest and largest teaching facility where you’ll access nationally ranked specialties (e.g., Gynecology, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Urology). Other prestigious facilities in our ACH include the Barrett Cancer Center, Hamilton County Coroner, Hoxworth Blood Center, Mayfield Clinic, and West Chester, Jewish & Holmes Hospitals. Moreover, being three miles from the city core, students have limitless experiential learning opportunities. UCCOM strongly encourages students to serve our community (e.g., student-run and Cincinnati Public School-based clinics, community-based service). With the most dense population of any major city in Ohio (and 28th in the nation), you might assume that residents would be “me” focused and too busy moving about to acknowledge their neighbors, but that is hardly the case. Even better, in a city this big and this vibrant it’s difficult to be bored!

Visit the Contemporary Arts Center, see a performance at historic Music Hall, or listen to new talent at the Woodward Theater. Consider yourself to be the “outdoorsy” type? Cincinnati Parks are ranked #1 parks system in the US and just outside the city limits (~15 miles from downtown), you’ll find a wide range of diverse biking, hiking, canoeing and recreating. With all of that activity, who wouldn’t work up an appetite? Cincinnati was recently ranked 6th Best Foodie City in the nation according to Wallethub. From Cincinnati style chili and Graeter's Ice Cream (6th best Ice Cream in the US) to the innumerable delectable mom and pop restaurants in (Over-the-Rhine, Oakley, etc.), you are guaranteed to never go hungry. When considering moving to a new place for medical school one of the top things you are probably considering is: “how much is all of this going to cost me?”. It’s important to consider that the “cost” of medical school is more than just tuition (ex: rent, groceries, insurance, etc.) and those things cost more or less depending upon where you live.

Did you know Cincinnati is ranked the #1 destination nationwide for those who just finished college (SmartAsset, 2016)? We’re also ranked 5th for the Most Affordable city and 15th Best City for Young Professionals (Forbes, 2016)! Our cost of living ranks as the third-lowest among major U.S. cities, seven percent below the national average and more affordable than virtually all of our regional competitors. According to 2016 data, living in Cincinnati costs 30% less than the Washington DC, Columbus OH, and Nashville and 22% less than Chicago. The cost of groceries, utilities, transportation, and healthcare are also more affordable here compared to the national average.

It’s also important to know that Cincinnati Medicine also has the lowest tuition in the region compared to our medical school competitors and has held tuition costs steady for our students (<2% change in 5 years). We also offer Kentucky residents and residents of certain Indiana counties a special tuition rate that is approximately equal to that of Ohio residents. Also, regardless of where they’re from, virtually all of our students pay in-state tuition by their Second Year (it’s as easy as an application!).

Although our affordability isn’t the only GREAT thing about us, it definitely factors into the equation of why the nation’s most promising future physicians choose us. The “cost” of a premier medical education is just less here - that’s the bottom line.

So, where exactly is Cincinnati?

We are located closer to Kentucky than most of Ohio and are recognized as Ohio’s oldest and most populated major city. Cincinnati is in the Bluegrass Region, situated on the north bank of the Ohio River.

In 1788, Cincinnati was the first major US city founded after the American Revolution. Unlike the commonly held perceptions that Ohio is a state characterized by pastoral plains, Cincinnati is defined by its rolling hills covered in lush vegetation. More than 160 years ago Cincinnati was given the nickname “City of Seven Hills,” to describe its geography that surrounds the snaking Ohio River. The University of Cincinnati Medical Center is built atop one of these hills and overlooks our city from just 3 miles away. Voted #24 among the “Most Beautiful Medical Schools in US” and ranked among the US’s top 40 College of Medicine’s, you can be assured that the view from here is looking good!

Speaking of views, our skyline is ranked number 10 in the nation (and top in Ohio!), beating out icons like Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Miami. In 2017 U.S. News and World Report named Cincinnati the 53rd best city in the country to live in and Cincinnati was the top Ohio city on the list. We also possess a rare and diverse range of historic neighborhoods to choose from. Whether you prefer to live in a quaint nearby suburb or a trendy urban neighborhood, Cincinnati has a neighborhood for everyone! No matter where you live, Cincinnati's average commute time is quicker than the national average.

Cincinnati is also unique in Ohio because we truly experience all seasons. That’s right! Cincinnati is the only Ohio city located between the arctic and tropic zones, meaning that we experience distinct changes across all four seasons and have a much milder winter than you might expect. What’s the take home message? Don’t assume anything about Cincinnati, because we defy those assumptions and we’re more than happy to introduce you to this rare, historic city!
