About the Residency Program:

The University of Cincinnati Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery residency program is a five-year program accredited by the ACGME.

The program is centered at University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), a 699-bed acute care facility. UCMC is the only Level I adult trauma center in the tristate area and is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Residents will spend time at West Chester Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, as well as community hospitals throughout the city.

Resident education is the primary commitment of the faculty and staff of the Department of Otolaryngology. Clinical faculty members have dual appointments, practicing at UC Health and teaching at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, one of the top 50 medical schools in the country. Our faculty members have access to the latest technological procedures and clinical trial medications, ensuring the best quality of care for our patients.

Our mission is to educate resident physicians in the evaluation, care and management of injuries and diseases associated with the head & neck and to teach skills necessary to provide optimum care. A mentoring process is developed from initiation of the training program. The program is structured to develop skills in a progressive fashion.

This mission will be achieved by:

• Didactic conferences and course attendance in all areas related to otolaryngology. These include general and pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology and care of the professional voice, head and neck oncology, otologic disorders, skull-base surgery, sinonasal disorders, allergy, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, laryngotracheal disorders, head and neck reconstruction, and hearing and balance disorders.
• Diagnosing and managing otolaryngology problems on a daily basis. Clinical exposure to otolaryngology head and neck surgery will be gained in the emergency room, outpatient clinics, the operating room and in conferences. Responsibility will increase in a graduated fashion and will be closely monitored by the faculty and program director in the form of biannual reviews and milestone evaluations.

Resident fund of knowledge will be assessed by faculty evaluations, milestone evaluations and the ABO in-training examination. In addition, quality of patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal skills and system-based practice will be assessed at the end of each rotation and then reviewed by the Chairman, Residency Program Director and the Clinical Competency Committee on a regular basis.
