Lab Facilities

The laboratory of Dr. Cushion is located at the Cincinnati Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and consists of about 1900 sq. ft and is fully stocked with all equipment needed for her research needs including centrifuges, freezers, walk-in cooler and 3 certified biological safety cabinets.  Integral instrumentation in her laboratory include:

  • Olympus IX83 fully motorized inverted microscope capable of performing multiple imaging techniques.
  • Synergy HTX multi-mode plate reader
  • iBright CL1000 imaging system for blots and gels
  • Olympus BX51 and Nikon Eclipse TE2000-U inverted microscope, both equipped with epifluorescence.
  • Miltenyi gentleMacs tissue dissociators for 2 and 8 samples.
  • 2 Izon Automatic Fraction Collectors
  • Nano-Drop spectrophotometer
  • Applied Biosystems 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR system
  • Drummond Nanojet III for microinjection
  • Scintillation counter for radioactivity studies

At the VAMC, animal studies are performed in the Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) which has >7000 sq. ft. of space to perform BSL-1 and BSL-2 research.  The VMU is AAALAC approved, staffed with full veterinary and technical support and provides education and training to all investigators.  All animal rooms are fully equipped with the appropriate PPE to limit biohazard exposure.
