Minor in Public Health

The Interdisciplinary minor in Public Health integrates key aspects of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, communities and individuals. The Public Health minor is ideal for students who are in a program in a health related field, but may also appeal to students in other colleges who have an interest in learning about how their major impacts the broader aspects of the field of public health (such as pre-law, urban planning, criminal justice, education, and landscape design, among others). Students in the minor increase their awareness of emerging issues in public health, the social and behavioral aspects of preventing disease, environmental health concepts, the changing U.S. health care system and the monitoring of diseases in the community through their study of applied public health research.

Requirements and Curriculum

The Public Health minor requires students to complete 18 credit hours. Students will complete courses from three required core areas, which are essential to studies in public health. Students then round out their studies by selecting from a diverse offering of electives, both online and in the classroom, across multiple colleges.

Minor Curriculum

There are different course level options within the required and elective course options. The 1000 and 2000 level courses are recommended for those students not currently pursuing a health-related major and/or freshman and sophomore students. The 3000 level courses are recommended for those students in health-related major and/or junior and senior level students.
