to help solve pressing health problems. The graduate program at the University of Cincinnati, in partnership with Cincinnati Children's Hospital, is one of the first to focus specifically on computational biomedicine.
The University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s have a rich history of discovery and innovation, with expertise in genetic, environmental, and developmental origins of disease. Research breakthroughs have included development of the live
oral polio vaccine, the first practical heart-lung machine, artificial lung surfactant, the rotavirus vaccine, first use of the YAG laser, discovery of the health effects of lead exposure, and development of Benadryl, and much more. Our students are
embedded in this research community.
The research endowment at Cincinnati Children’s supports scientific training, infrastructure, state-of-the-art technology and shared “core” facilities. Shared facilities span a range of activities, from molecular and cell biology (e.g.,
Flow Cytometry; Gene Expression; DNA Sequencing; Pyrosequencing; Genetic Editing; NMR-based Metabolomics; Pluripotent Stem Cell), to animal models (e.g., Comprehensive Mouse Models; Animal Behavior and Phenotyping; Transgenic Animals and Genomic Editing);
to Imaging (e.g., Confocal Microscopy; Magnetic Resonance; Cardiovascular and Non-Vascular imaging), to Clinical Research (e.g., Biobank; Clinical and Translational Research).
Cincinnati Children’s also make substantial investments to create a productive research environment. To nurture the careers of young faculty, the medical center offers an array of internal grants. These awards provide critical funding for promising
research until the investigator can compete for external grants.
Our graduate programs offer early-career scientists direct connections to patient care. In this environment researchers can witness the impact their work has on patient care directly as discoveries are translated from bench to bedside.
At Cincinnati Children’s, the research infrastructure is built alongside the patient care facilities. The newest research tower, the “Clinical Sciences Pavilion” (also known as “Location T”) opened in June of 2015. With 445,000
square feet, the building features wet and dry laboratories in a 14-story building adjoining the existing research tower. It is situated in the middle of the campus, adjacent to the hospital and clinics. Along with laboratory and conference spaces
purposefully built to enhance collaborations among clinicians and scientists, the building also houses a 28-room dedicated research clinic, inclusive of multiple imaging modalities.
On the adult side, the region’s top clinicians and researchers provide world-class care at the region’s only adult academic medical center, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, which is part of UC Health.
UC Health is an integrated system spanning across the Tristate region. It includes West Chester Hospital, Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care, Lindner Center of HOPE, Bridgeway Point, and University of Cincinnati Physicians, a 750-plus physician
Faculty members in Biomedical Informatics are highly skilled teachers and accomplished researchers. They provide theoretical understanding and support students in applying
what they've learned to real-world situations.
Our faculty members focus on a number of investigational areas through both independent and collaborative research. Topics they pursue include discovery and analysis of gene regulatory networks; natural language processing of clinical information; modeling
patterns of gene expression during embryogenesis; and patterns of gene expression and protein interactions in metabolic pathways of human pathogens.
We are breaking new ground in pediatric cancer, autoimmunity, neurocognitive and other disorders by developing new algorithms and software to integrate transcriptome and other omics data into clinical support decision systems and precision therapies.
