How to Apply

View the video our residents created to welcome the Matched UC Neurology Residents!

Current PGY-2 class

Candidates must have graduated from an approved American medical or osteopathic school or hold permanent certification by the Qualification Board of the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Our department utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicants are required to apply through ERAS. Please visit the ERAS website to obtain information on submission and minimum criteria.

We do not have a strict deadline for applications, but candidates are encouraged to apply before mid-October. Our program typically receives more than 800 applications per year and only selects 96 for interviews.

Since our program is categorical, residents who match with our program will automatically be granted preliminary positions in UC's internal medicine department. If you are invited for a UC neurology interview, you will receive more information about this arrangement during your interview day.

Our program traditionally has group interview dates in October, November, December and possibly January. The interview includes one paid night stay at an on-campus hotel, dinner the evening before with current residents, general information sessions in the morning, challenging case conferences during lunch with residents and faculty and interviews in the afternoons.  With the advent of COVID, our residency program will be exclusively having virtual interviewing for this Match in the months of November and December.  This will include the normal Monday as well as an evening session with our residents the night before.

Our department proudly accepts osteopathic physicians (DOs) and uses COMLEX scores equally to USMLE scores.

The neurology and rehabilitation medicine department does accept international medical graduates (IMGs), but only sponsors J1 Visas. Ideally, IMG applicants should have ECFMG certification before applying to our program, but we understand that students in their last year of medical school will not have their certifications before applying in the match.

Our program does not require U.S. clinical experience.

We do not have a strict cutoff date for completion of medical school, but ideally would like applicants to be within a few years of receiving their diplomas before consideration of interview. Clinical experiences and research experiences will be considered.

The UC neurology department takes all information into account when considering resident candidates including medical school grades, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, research performance, extracurricular activities, etc. Our current group of residents has an average USMLE score of 224.

Starting with the 2022 match, our program will offer ten positions per year.
