Molecular Genetics Track Course Work
Required course work in the first year provides students with advanced knowledge in the areas of molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology.
Students also learn to critically evaluate research and practice presentation skills through a three-semester journal club course.
Electives, taken in the first and second years, are required to provide more in-depth knowledge in several disciplines of the student's choice.
Below is an overview of the required course work schedule for Years 1 and 2 of the program:
Year 1 Required Course*
Fall Semester | Spring Semester |
---|---|
Molecular and Cellular Biology | Biochemistry and Cellular Metabolism** |
Introductory Microbiology** | Mechanisms of Signal Transduction** |
Molgen Journal Club | Biomedical Ethics |
Molgen Journal Club |
Year 2 Required Courses*
Fall Semester | Spring Semester |
---|---|
Professional Development and Grant Writing | Statistics for the Biomedical Sciences |
Molgen Journal Club |
*In addition to the required courses listed above, students will complete elective classes in specialized topics (hours variable). Students are additionally encouraged to explore appropriate elective classes that are offered outside of our department by other graduate programs.
** Introductory Microbiology, Biochemistry and Cellular Metabolism, and Mechanisms of Signal Transduction are part of a pick 2 of 5 requirement. If all 3 of these courses are taken, the additional course satisfies an elective requirement. Please contact Dr. Miller for more information.
