Admission Requirements and Qualifications

Applications for the Biomedical Informatics PhD program are accepted between September 1 and February 15 of each year, for admission in Fall Semester of the following academic year. Applicants are strongly encouraged to work with the BMI Program Coordinator throughout the process.

Qualifications:

Successful applicants to the program typically have a strong quantitative and/or computational background and a keen interest in biomedical informatics or a related discipline. Those with a major of study in areas such as biology, mathematics, computer science, bioengineering, chemistry, or statistics are well positioned to enter the field.

Admission Requirements:

• Completed Baccalaureate Degree or higher (from accredited institution)
  • Preferred 3.5 GPA or higher (4.0 scale)
    • To account for differences in grading scales, candidates with GPAs in the top 10% of their class from highly selective programs of study will be considered
  • Unofficial transcripts from all previous institutions attended
• Completed Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • Preferred score 300 or above
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the GRE test requirement has been temporarily waived.  This test waiver applies to all domestic and international applicants seeking admission for fall 2021.
• English Proficiency Test (international applicants only)
  • TOEFL (minimum 100 score)
  • IELTS (minimum 7 score)

• Online Application
  • Includes application fees as set by the University of Cincinnati Graduate School ($65 for domestic applicants; $70 for international applicants)
• Unofficial Transcripts from all institutions previously attended
  • Unofficial transcripts are sufficient for the application process; however, students that are accepted and confirm admission are required to submit official transcripts prior to course registration.
• Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (international applicants only)
• Statement of Purpose
  • One-page statement of purpose must be submitted
• Letters of Recommendation
  • A minimum of three letters of recommendation must be submitted

All application materials, including unofficial transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, etc., should be submitted by the application deadline of February 15.
