Psychiatry Student Interest Group

The UC College of Medicine has two student-run clubs: the Psychiatry Student Interest Group (PSIG) and the Child Psychiatry Student Interest Group (CPSIG). Both groups host a variety of activities to introduce students to topics in psychiatry.

These activities give students the opportunity to meet psychiatry residents and faculty in an informal setting and provide a timeout from busy schedules to socialize with fellow medical students.

The format of recent meetings included:

  • Lunch time meetings with a psychiatry faculty member leading an informal discussion about pertinent developments/topics in the field of psychiatry (e.g., forensic mental health, PTSD in soldiers, addiction medicine)
  • Faculty hosted dinner meetings viewing movies (“Superbad”) or TV programs (“In Treatment,” “Mental”) with discussion following
  • Attendance at psychologically themed plays
  • Book club

All students are welcome to attend PSIG/CPSIG meetings. Food is provided.

Students are encouraged to become a medical student member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and participate in PsychSIGN, a national medical student interest group network for students interested in careers in psychiatry.

Student membership to both organizations is free.
