Academic Overview

The Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease is fully committed to educating and training the next generation of physicians, clinicians, scientists and leaders. In addition to programs designed specifically for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, residents and visiting scientists, we offer fellowship programs in cardiovascular disease, heart failure, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and adult congenital heart disease.

Cardiovascular Disease

The cardiovascular disease fellowship is a three-year program with an option for fourth or fifth years of dedicated research for clinician-scientists and clinician investigators, respectively. Masters degrees of health science and public health are available through our Clinical Translation Science Program. The fellowship attracts highly competitive applicants who are committed to academic careers in cardiovascular medicine and related disciplines.

Heart Failure

The heart failure/transplant fellowship is a one year training program that offers clinicians intensive training to become adept with evaluating and managing patients with advanced congestive heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation. Fellows develop expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients in both hospital and ambulatory settings. In addition, the fellowship program offers formal instruction in the methodologies needed to perform research in heart failure and conduct clinical trials. Basic and translational science opportunities are available as well. Our fellows build a strong knowledge base that will support a successful academic career.

Interventional Cardiology

The interventional cardiology fellowship provides extensive technical experience in the performance of all interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures as well as a broad clinical experience in the care of patients with complex coronary artery and structural heart disease. Fellows are expected to pursue additional relevant reading and become actively involved in scholarly activities designed to teach practice-based learning and improvement. Research is strongly encouraged, and a wide variety of research opportunities in basic, translational or clinical research are available.

Electrophysiology

The clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellowship is a one year program aimed at training clinically competent electro physiologists meeting American Board of Internal Medicine requirements. Upon completion of the program the fellow will be subspecialty board eligible. The emphasis is on complex procedures, safety, patient-centered care, cutting-edge technology and clinical investigation. Research is strongly encouraged. Our program is characterized by a diversity of patients, experienced clinicians and a robust collaboration with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)

The ACHD Program is structured according to the requirements set forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine and provides advanced training in preparation for ACHD Board eligibility. Our program is unlike any other in the country and integrates the expertise and training of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center -among the world’s top institutions and UCMC.
