How to Apply

Postdoctoral Students

Postdoctoral applicants usually arrive with an interest in a specific trainer’s lab. Their application is reviewed by the program directors and the Internal Advisory Committee (IAC) and, if found competitive, the applicant is invited to present a formal seminar to the faculty and trainees. Faculty and trainees are then asked to provide written comments to the IAC for further discussion and evaluation.

The following criteria are important for selection: Graduate School performance, publications and references. An in-depth interview with the program directors and IAC for evaluation of research potential and dedication is key. Once accepted into the training program, each trainee will be appointed a mentoring committee, which will help in career guidance, writing mentorship, and scientific and technical oversight.

The postdoctoral trainee’s mentoring committee also assists with an individual development plan (IDP) to facilitate and explicitly discuss research, learning, teaching and career goals for the trainee. This IDP is updated and evaluated at the committee meetings held every six months for postdoctoral trainees.

The trainees are encouraged to collaborate on their projects utilizing the wealth of expertise/techniques among the various mentors’ laboratories.

Predoctoral Students

PhD graduate students who have completed all course work requirements are admitted to candidacy. These graduates are committed to a career in the cardiovascular sciences, and have selected one of the mentors in our faculty. The student may come from one of the approved graduate programs, each under the aegis of a department, or part of the FLEX program.
