About the Division

The UC Division of Hematology Oncology was founded in 1948 by Richard Vilter, MD, as the Hematology Division of the Department of Internal Medicine.  At the time, it was one of few divisions of Hematology in the United States. In 1976, the division was combined to include both disciplines of Hematology and Medical Oncology.

The division strives to achieve academic excellence by providing cutting edge treatment, generating new knowledge and teaching to the next generation of hematologists, oncologists, and cancer biologists.

Our faculty consists of academic physicians, clinical investigators, lab-based investigators, clinical and research fellows and advanced practice providers that collectively support a Solid Tumor Service, a Bone Marrow and Cellular Transplant Service, a Developmental Therapeutics Program, a Hemophilia, Bleeding Disorder and Thrombosis Center and a Sickle Cell Center.

Our division is an integral part of the UC Cancer Center and actively contributes to its Centers of Excellence, multidisciplinary clinics, tumor boards, and scientific programs.

In the coming years, we anticipate to continue to add a significant number of faculty to our ranks in order to grow our clinical and research programs.  With these efforts we will continue to expand our clinical research, translational and basic science research programs in the emerging fields of cancer immunotherapy, precision medicine, cancer metabolism and drug resistance.

Examples of Departments and Centers of academic unities we closely collaborate with within our Academic Health Center include:
