Director’s Welcome

Image of Carolyn ChanDear Prospective Fellows,
Welcome to the University of Cincinnati Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program! We are thrilled to introduce you to our fellowship, which is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a leader in addiction medicine.

About us:

The UC Addiction Fellowship is committed to training the next generation of addiction medicine specialists who will play a vital role in preventing and treating substance use disorders. Our program is rooted in evidence-based practices, compassion, and a holistic approach to patient care. We believe that there is “no wrong door” to entering substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and work to engage with patients to help them achieve their individual goals.

What Sets Us Apart:

  1. Diverse Clinical Experiences: Fellows will have the opportunity to rotate in a diverse number of clinical environments, such as an Inpatient Addiction Consult Service at a tertiary hospital, an Opioid-Treatment Program, Outpatient Addiction Sciences with a low-barrier treatment model accepting walk-in patients 4 days a week. In addition, through the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, fellows will rotate in several core rotations: dual-diagnosis clinic, contingency management, inpatient medically supervised withdrawal management, and a tobacco cessation clinic. Faculty experts in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and return-to-use prevention counseling will provide direct feedback to fellows on these skills.
  2. Community Engagement: We recognize the importance of community engagement in addressing SUD. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with community organizations, participate in outreach programs, and engage in advocacy efforts aimed at promoting public health.
  3. Research Opportunities: The Center for Addiction Research at UC is a national leader in addiction research. It offers a rich array of resources and the opportunity to collaborate with over 25 faculty members, depending on the fellow’s interests.

Please explore this site to learn more about what our fellowship offers through clinical rotations, curriculum, faculty, and the city of Cincinnati! We look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Carolyn A. Chan MD, MHS
