Welcome to the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Our missions include pursuit of excellence in education, clinical care, and research.
Our faculty members have major clinical and teaching roles in the College of Medicine, serving as clinicians and educators at multiple sites including the College of Medicine, inpatient and ambulatory venues at UC Health’s University Hospital, the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Deaconess Hospital, and multiple community practice sites in the UC Health Primary Care Network.
During the past decade the Division of General Internal Medicine has experienced considerable growth, particularly in its Hospitalist Program as we continue to grow in order to staff University Hospital’s medical bed expansion.
The Hospitalist Program has evolved from staffing uncovered, non-teaching services to becoming fully integrated with our educational programs, with all hospitalist teams becoming teaching teams. In the ambulatory arena we have aggressively pursued the development of patient centered medical homes (PCMH); some practices having already received level 3 NCQA recognition. These activities have been supported by our involvement in regional PCMH initiatives through the Cincinnati Health Collaborative.
Faculty in the Division has assumed leadership roles in UC Health’s Primary Care Network and we look forward to an increasingly aligned partnership with our community practices.
Educational innovation has been at the forefront of our efforts with Division faculty leading the ACGME sponsored Educational Innovation Project (EIP) that is helping to reshape the Internal Medicine Residency program.
The University of Cincinnati is a recipient of one of the NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards, which was renewed in 2015, in which faculty of the Division of General Internal Medicine have significant leadership roles and also are involved as educators in the College of Medicine’s Master’s degree program in Clinical and Translational Research.
The Division of General Internal Medicine is home to the Center for Clinical Effectiveness and has substantial involvement (now housed in the new department of Biomedical Informatics) with the Center for Health Informatics. Investigators in these centers are pursuing research focused on such areas as health-related quality of life, cost-effectiveness analysis and pharmacoeconomics, decision analysis and simulation modeling, medical and clinical research informatics, and the development of decision support tools to facilitate patient-centered decision making, among others.
We provide comprehensive and coordinated care, working hand-in-hand with our specialist colleagues. Major focus areas of clinical expertise and clinical research include – headache, sickle cell disease, transitional care for pediatric patients with chronic diseases as they become adults with adult survivors of pediatric cancers as one of several examples, hyperlipidemias, anticoagulation therapy, atrial fibrillation, and end-of-life and palliative care.
The physicians in the division are honored to have the opportunity to care for patients and train medical students, residents and fellows at University Hospital and UC College of Medicine, which has been identified as one of the top 50 medical schools in the country.
We look forward to an exciting future as we fulfill our visions to become leaders in integrated, patient-centered care, innovative clinical research and outstanding education.
