Clinical Focus
The main objective of our clinical endeavors is to provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to the management of complex bone and soft tissue infections. Pooling our resources from the departments of Infectious Disease, Orthopedics, and Surgery allows us to more completely address the needs of this patient population. Utilizing this team approach we provide expertise in the medical management of these infections, bony debridement and fixation, and soft tissue reconstruction. We treat patients with complex orthopedic injuries, fracture related infections, and soft tissue wounds related to pressure ulcers. Our clinicians work together on the hospital wards, in the operating room, and in the outpatient setting to ensure patients are provided with a smooth transition of care as they progress through their treatment course.
The Center for Bone Infection is committed to providing premier treatment for patients with bone infections.
In alignment with this mission, we have created a joint Orthopaedics and Infectious Diseases Clinic as well as an Inpatient Orthopaedic Infection Service. We are currently working to develop a multidisciplinary clinic.
Orthopaedics and Infectious Diseases Clinic
In our combined Orthopedics and Infectious Disease Clinic we provide multidisciplinary care to our patients in real time. Our patients have in person access two both specialties in same location and the same time to openly discuss their surgical and medical treatments plans and hear the opinions of the two specialties. This clinic was created to improve the quality of care provided to our patient affected by orthopedic-related infections.
Inpatient Orthopaedic Infection Service
We established an inpatient sub-specialty consultation
service for the evaluation of patients with complex orthopedics infections. All
patients evaluated under this service are discussed during the orthopedic
department academic meeting (Bone Boards) to facilitate co-management between
orthopedic and infectious diseases. This service facilitates the transition of
care to of these patients to the Orthopedics Infectious Diseases combined
clinic.
Future Clinical Services
We are working to develop a multidisciplinary clinic for the management of decubitus ulcers/chronic osteomyelitis. Our team will have plastics, orthopedics, infectious diseases, nutrition, wound care and other that are fundamental to the care of these complex patients.
