Student Mind-Body Skills Course

mind-body meditationThe student mind-body course aims to reduce stress and burnout and enhance mental and emotional well-being for students through mind-body skills training. Students learn adaptive stress management and practice evidence-based, mind-body techniques that emphasize healing, self care, awareness, and work-life balance.

The Osher Center for Integrative Health at UC specializes in mindfulness programs including mind-body skills training for students and faculty. Mind-body techniques are effective for improving stress, anxiety, depression and well-being across a wide range of populations (e.g., Saunders et al., 2007; Shapiro et al., 1998). Mind-body skills training includes mindful meditation, biofeedback, guided imagery, and relaxation practices. Students learn various mind-body medicine techniques, practice them, and discuss their experiences with their small group. Students also have an opportunity for individual attention and instruction, as well as sharing what they are learning about mind-body medicine and about themselves.

Testimonials from Student Participants

“Take this workshop. If you do one thing with your time take this workshop. You owe it to yourself and all the people you care about in your life. Some of things you learn in this course may not be your thing, but I guarantee you some of things you learn will be things that stick with you for the rest of your life. It will change the way you think about and approach stressful situations, I would be very surprised if at the end of it, you weren't a happier, more laid back person.”

“I would highly recommend this course! The mindfulness techniques that I learned in this course have changed how I view myself and my coursework. I feel empowered to face the challenges that lie ahead.”

“Do it.  Put all preconceived notions, skepticism, and worry aside and do it.  You'll see a side of medical students you may not have known was there.  You'll gain a sense of community and place that you won't even know you needed.  It is wonderful.”
