The University of Cincinnati Robert Lukin Fund was established in 2007. Funds from the endowment were designated to support the research and education efforts of the neuroradiology program at the University of Cincinnati.

Robert Lukin, MD, FACR grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961. He then attended the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1965. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati radiology residency program in 1971.

In 1972, Dr. Lukin completed a combined Neuroradiology/VA Teaching fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Lukin chose neuroradiology as his subspecialty because he believed neuroradiology was integral to the future of modern diagnostic medicine; one that he envisioned would exploit new imaging technology and interventional procedures.

At the invitation of Ben Felson, MD, Chair of Radiology and Jerome Wiot, MD, Vice Chair of Radiology, Dr. Lukin joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati in 1972. At that time, neuroradiology was a new subspecialty. Dr. Lukin was the only full-time neuroradiologist in the region when he joined the department. He led the charge for the development of neuroradiology as a specialty at the University and throughout the community.

Dr. Lukin served as Director of Neuroradiology from 1972 to 1993. Under his direction, the section became one of the top neuroradiology sections in the country.

Dr. Lukin served as the Chair of Radiology from 1993 to 2008. During his tenure as Chair, he continued the tradition of excellence in clinical training and technological leadership in imaging and was instrumental in placing more focus on research.

He guided the department into the modern era of diagnostic medicine through the introduction of CT and MR imaging and innovative interventional techniques. He was instrumental in the acquisition of the first CT scanner for the department and for the Greater Cincinnati community.

Over 350 residents and fellows have benefited from the knowledge and expertise of Dr. Lukin. Under his leadership, strength of the residency and fellowship programs contributed to Dr. Lukin’s vision for the future of Radiology, which was one of continued growth and innovation.

Dr. Lukin served as President of the American Society of Neuroradiology from 1995-1996 and received the Society’s Gold Medal Award in 2008. He served as a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) from 1997 to 2007. In this capacity, he was instrumental in the creation of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and supervised the Written, Oral, CAQ, and Recertification Exams in Neuroradiology. He received the ABR Lifetime Service Award in March of 2010.

In recognition of his long and excellent service to the Department, the Medical Center, the University Hospital, and to organized Radiology, the 2010 UC Department of Radiology annual Felson Lecture was dedicated to Dr. Lukin.

Dr. Lukin continues to perform clinical duties and to teach residents and fellows at the University of Cincinnati.
