Research Overview

The Department of Pharmacology & Systems Physiology conducts state-of-the-art research into a variety of basic science, applied science and translational questions. Research involves mechanistic and quantitative aspects of physiological processes and mechanisms, as well as potential drug targets. The research endeavors of the PSP department are diverse and varied, but can be loosely categorized into four main focus areas:

  • Cardiovascular biology
  • Gastrointestinal physiology, epithelial biology and membrane transport
  • Neurophysiology and pharmacology
  • Computational systems biology

These are loosely defined categories, however, and focus areas can be stratified in a number of different ways. There are extensive collaborations within the department and withother basic science departments in the UC College of Medicine. There are also extensive interactions with the many institutes in the College, including the Heart Lung and Vascular Institute (HLVI), the Cancer Institute, and the Neuroscience Institute.

For additional details on these projects, see the research interests listed for the individual faculty members.
