Combined Electives

Combined electives are another strategy for optimizing learning. These electives constitute some of the residents’ most highly rated months. They use a wide variety of clinics.

So what do we have? We currently offer month long ambulatory med-peds rotations in:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Rheumatology
  • Pulmonary medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Nephrology
  • AllergyiImmunology
  • Tansition medicine
  • Combined med-peds primary care


What is Combined Med-Peds Primary Care?
For a month in the first year, you do a variety of Med-Peds things: Med-Peds and pediatric clinics, and subspecialty experiences in: Sports medicine, orthopedics, transitional medicine, lead clinic, high risk clinic, dermatology, home visits, EBM, and rural medicine. There is also no call!

There is an in depth syllabus that covers:

  • Evidence based medicine with clinical informatics
  • Appalachian culture
  • Humanism
  • Ethical and legal issues
  • Psychiatry
  • Ophthalmology
  • And, 50 of the most important articles on primary care topics.
