About the Program

Family and Community Medicine faculty are involved in education and curriculum design within all four years of the UC College of Medicine curriculum. Medical students gain clinical experience by completing the Fundamentals of Doctoring Course during their first (M1) and second year (M2), which is co-directed by family medicine faculty. The Family and Community Medicine Core Clerkship is a required part of the curriculum in the third year (M3).

Core Courses 

Fundamentals of Doctors (M1 and M2)

The Fundamentals of Doctoring course at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare medical students for the clinical aspects of patient care. Beginning in the second half of the M1 year, students are paired with preceptors across medical specialties and work collaboratively with these preceptors every other week in the outpatient setting. Through mentorship, preceptorship and direct patient care, the Fundamentals of Doctoring course helps student develop essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective communication, physical examination, and patient-centered care beginning in the first year of medical school.

Family and Community Medicine Clerkship

All UC medical students experience a 4-week clerkship in family and community medicine in their third year.During the clerkship, students are placed with a community preceptor and attend workshops and interactive sessions with family medicine faculty that develop skills in behavioral medicine and clinical science. Over 150 family physicians in 50 community practices serve as volunteer preceptors, exposing students to a wide array of practice settings and populations.

Electives

Electives in the fourth year include family medicine inpatient and outpatient rotations, a family medicine acting internship, as well as electives in geriatric medicine, palliative care, intellectual and developmental disabilities, homeless health, service-learning, transgender health, and research.
