About the Program

A joint program between the College of Medicine and College of Engineering & Applied Science, in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

The inter-collegiate Biomedical Informatics (BMI) Graduate Certificate program offers graduate-level training in the field of biomedical informatics, complementing existing MS and PhD degree programs at the University of Cincinnati. The program is open to graduate students, as well as clinicians and health care professionals. 

As an avalanche of data and the increasing sophistication of technology change the way biomedical research is conducted, data scientists are an essential part of the research team. Biomedical informatics experts are in high demand for their ability to dive deeply into clinical, molecular and genomic data and help other scientists and researchers. The BMI graduate program at UC and Cincinnati Children’s is working to meet that demand.

The graduate certificate is based on the principle of combining foundations in computer science and engineering with state-of-the-art clinical and biomedical applications. The curriculum consists of seven courses (19 credit hours), which includes four core courses, a one-credit hour seminar, and two electives.

The collaboration between Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati provides students exciting opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research while being embedded in one of the premier health care centers in the nation.  

Biomedical informatics is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field. It encompasses the development and implementation of informatics systems for the improved delivery of health care, as well as computational and analytical methods that advance biomedical research. In recent years, BMI has become an integral component of both clinical and translational research and the health care infrastructure, increasing the demand for researchers and professionals who can take advantage of these concurrent innovations. 

Admission Requirements

• Completed Baccalaureate Degree or higher (from accredited institution)
  • Preferred 3.0 GPA or higher
• English Proficiency Test (international applicants only)
  • TOEFL (minimum score: 100)
  • IELTS (minimum score: 7)

  • Includes application fees as set by the University of Cincinnati Graduate School ($20 for domestic applicants; $25 for international applicants)
• Transcripts from all institutions previously attended
• Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (international applicants only)
• Letters of Recommendation
  • Two letters of recommendation must be submitted

Applications for the BMI Graduate Certificate are accepted through both the College of Medicine and College of Engineering & Applied Science. The program is the same regardless of which College the application is submitted through.
