Site Description
Parish nursing in Cincinnati was pioneered by TriHealth in 1990 by Good Samaritan Hospital. Parish nursing at TriHealth
strives to journey with and empower others as they move toward health and healing in body, mind and spirit. Parish nurses
work in the community to do health screenings; health education; lead support groups; provide information about wellness
and prevention; and connect people with medical and social service agencies. The organization also provides spiritual
care – teaching the connection between mind, body and spirit. The organization is composed of 8 parish and 2 school
nurses that reach 16,000 clients each year. Today, parish nurses work in the following Cincinnati neighborhoods:
Over-the-Rhine, Fairmount, Clifton, Mt. Auburn, Avondale, Bond Hill, Walnut Hills, Winton Terrace/Hills and Price
Hill. The intern would be working with a special program – Winton Hills Community Health Worker Program. This
program is targeted at decreasing premature and low birth weight babies along with other health issues such as
asthma and chronic disease management.
Job Description
The intern will...
- Gain experience in a Christian medical setting that reaches people of all ages.
- Begin to understand the complex issues facing the underprivileged: finances, nutrition, home environment,
social services, access to healthcare.
- Gain an increased awareness of resources available to providers who care for urban, poor populations.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team consisting of a community health workers, a social worker and a parish nurse.
- Walk with community health workers along the streets of Winton Hills to provide health education, advocacy
and support to residents.
- Attend home visits and hospital visits to monitor client concerns such as maternity education.
- Help clients find the resources – such as food, medicine, transportation & housing – they need for ongoing assistance.
- Perform basic health screenings.
- Help to develop and teach/distribute educational programs on topics pertaining to health, nutrition and life skills.
