Residency Program

Application Process

The Radiation Oncology Department participates in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). We accept applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Therefore, you will need to apply through your medical school or through the ECFMG. In general, you will need to supply the following items:

  • Letter of Interest / Statement of Purpose
  • CV with current contact information (full name, address, phone, e-mail)
  • Medical school transcript
  • MSPE (Dean's Letter)
  • USMLE Transcript
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Completion certificate for medical school
  • Completion certificates for any GME training (PGY1 level and above)
  •  Photograph (optional)

All residents must have completed a preliminary “internship” year of training in a U.S.-accredited program prior to entering our residency. The Radiation Oncology residency program does not include an integrated internship year, but does require a preliminary year of study in either internal medicine, pediatrics or general surgery, chosen by the resident. Applications are accepted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 31

.

International Medical Graduates

IMGs interested in applying to our program must apply through ERAS. We do not accept paper or e-mail applications.

The Department of Radiation Oncology sponsors J-1 visas only. Individuals must have graduated from medical school within the past five years and completed one year of preliminary training in a US-accredited program recognized by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

IMGs must possess a valid ECFMG certificate which requires passing all components of the USMLE exam as well as other examinations as required by the ECFMG. The ECFMG certificate must be valid at the start of residency or the resident forfeits his or her position in the program.

In addition to the documents listed above, IMGs must also include in their application:

  •  Verification of ECFMG certification and photocopies of all exam results
  • Copy of medical diploma (translation required)
  • Medical school transcript
  • Copies of certification of previous GME experience (translation required)
  • Letter from residency program director verifying completion of one year of  training in a U.S.-accredited program
  • Letters of recommendation must have been written within the previous six months.

Osteopathic Graduates

The Department of Radiation Oncology does accept D.O. graduates into the program. USMLE testing is highly recommended.

Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 is required for application. Applications are reviewed in their entirety with no minimum score requirement; however, typical Step 1 USMLE scores for selected candidates have ranged in the upper 30 percent of all scores. A passing scores on all components, including Clinical Skills, is required prior to the start of residency.

Interviews

Candidates selected for a personal interview will be notified through ERAS. The program invites approximately 30 candidates annually, to interview for two positions. The interview season is from November through January. The program generally interviews eight to 10 candidates on a given Monday, which allows faculty the opportunity to get to know applicants as best we can, and to allow applicants to assess our program in a detailed way.

Ample time is allowed to speak with our residents about their experiences in our program. Applicants are invited to attend a Resident Luncheon during the interview day, hosted by the department and facilitated off-site by the current residents. This provides applicants an opportunity to interact with current residents in a more informal setting.

The program recommends that applicants arrive the evening before the interview day, which begins at 7:30 a.m. with Peer Review Conference. In addition to the Resident Luncheon, continental breakfast is provided in the department library, and light snacks and refreshments are available throughout the day.

Candidates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements and costs. However, information about local accommodation options will be furnished by the Program Coordinator at the time that an interview offer is made.
