The core learning experience in orthopaedic trauma is at University Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center. Residents are on call every fourth night covering a busy service and rotate in three-month blocks throughout the five years of training, encountering a broad spectrum of acute and reconstructive musculoskeletal trauma as well as pelvic, spinal, and appendicular injuries.
Working closely with the general surgery traumatologists, we offer aggressive management to the orthopaedic polytrauma patient. Three orthopaedic staff traumatologists, Drs. Michael Archdeacon, Toan Le, and John Wyrick provides the attending coverage for trauma call. Didactic conferences include weekly trauma rounds and a monthly conference for discussing basic trauma issues. In a hands-on laboratory, residents can practice with cadaveric workstations and saw bones.
