About the Chair: Michael Archdeacon, MD

Michael Archdeacon, MD, has been the Chair of the UC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery since November 2013. He had previously served as interim chair since August when Peter Stern, MD, stepped down after 21 years as the department chair.

A professor of orthopaedic surgery and adjunct professor of biomedical engineering as well as the director of the division of musculoskeletal traumatology, Archdeacon also holds the Peter J. Stern, MD, Endowed Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Archdeacon had served as vice chair in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery since 2007 and medical director since 2002. His leadership roles at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center included serving as chief of staff from 2008 to 2012, and medical director for operative services.

A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and an Executive Board member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), Archdeacon lectures nationally and internationally and has published extensively on orthopaedic trauma. He currently serves as the treasurer / secretary of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society (OOS) as well as a deputy editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

He has participated in many College of Medicine and UC Health committees and now serves as the physician lead for the Revenue Management Work Stream Team of UC Health Project E. He has been active in his community as a youth hockey coach and in his church as a member of the St. James the Greater finance committee for 10 years.

Archdeacon received his bachelor of science in engineering from Tulane University and his medical degree and a master of science in biomedical engineering degree from The Ohio State University. He completed an internship and residency at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and fellowships in orthopaedic surgical research at Case Western and orthopaedic trauma at Florida Orthopaedic Institute at Tampa General Hospital.
