Research Focus

Neurology diagram

Primary Areas of Interest to the Lab

  1. Contribution of membrane transport proteins to cancer development. Of particular interest is a chloride channel, the hetero-pentameric GABA-A neurotransmitter receptor (see above).
  2. Membrane transport proteins as anti-cancer therapeutic targets. We are particularly interested in targeting primary and secondary (metastatic) brain tumors.
  3. Employing new and emerging technology to aid therapeutic delivery to brain tumors.

Laboratory and Research Environment

Univ. Cincinnati Medical School (1819) has made significant contributions to medicine, including development of the first live, attenuated polio vaccine (Albert Sabin) and the antihistamine Benadryl (George Rieveschl). It is a collaborative and supportive environment. Our lab is located in The Vontz Center for Molecular Studies, a gem designed by Frank Gehry. Most UC cancer labs are located here. Across the street is the Gardner Neuroscience Institute, the beautiful new clinical home of the UC Brain Tumor Center. The Vontz has in-house equipment/facilities for: flow cytometry; microscopy (confocal, widefield, live cell); animal storage; imaging (Bruker FX Pro); XenX x-ray irradiator (dose delivered with same precision as human radiotherapy); and proteonomics.
