Curriculum/Schedule

The goal of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program is to train neuro-intensivists who excel in all aspects of critical care management of patients with neurological conditions. Our infrastructure allows for the development of both outstanding clinical skills and academic expertise. The program’s built-in flexibility allows fellows to identify and pursue individual areas of interest to lay a foundation for their future careers.

The neurocritical care fellow will:

  1. Develop expertise in clinical management of patients with disorders of the brain and/or spinal cord including:
    a.   Initial resuscitation and emergency treatment/diagnostic evaluation.
    b.   Critical care management and treatment of neurological conditions.
    c.   Transitioning patients to the neurological rehabilitation phase of their treatment.

  2. Gain knowledge and understanding of the collaborative interaction between neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuro-radiologists, emergency medicine physicians, and trauma surgeons.

  3. Participate in opportunities for clinical and/or laboratory research in ongoing and/or newly developed studies.

The Neurocritical Care Fellow will participate as an active member of the NSICU team. He/she will:

  1. Participate in daily operation of the NSICU, reporting directly to faculty responsible for the service.

  2. Participate in the assessment and treatment of all NSICU patients including diagnostic procedures.

  3. Participate in the medical decision-making process and development of the treatment plan.

  4. Gain the essential procedural experience to provide critical care efficiently and effectively.

  5. Play an active role in ongoing clinical research protocols.
