Welcome to the Cincinnati Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), the combined M.D./Ph.D. program run jointly by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Physician-scientists are a remarkably successful group of individuals, comprising only 2.5% of medical school graduates, yet holding half of all NIH grants to physicians. They are truly individuals who make a difference in bench to bedside research. UCCOM has a long-standing institutional commitment to physician-scientist training. We recruit from a national pool of outstanding individuals from noted undergraduate schools and combine the depth of medical school training with the depth and rigor of graduate training in one of the College of Medicine’s ten graduate programs. Our graduates typically go on to residency and fellowship training in major academic medical centers. Although we are a fairly young program several of our earliest graduates are now faculty members directing their own research programs in leading medical schools. Our program’s strengths were recently acknowledged with our designation as a NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program. The University of Cincinnati has a rich history of cutting-edge advances in medicine, including the discovery of the antihistamine Benadryl and the development of the polio vaccine by Albert Sabin. Across the street, Cincinnati Children's Hospital is ranked #3 nationally in pediatrics. Together, these two institutions provide outstanding opportunities for training tomorrow's leaders in academic medicine.
