Mission and History of Molgen
The missions of the department:
- To promote globally competitive undergraduate, graduate and professional programs that feature interdisciplinary inquiry and foster intellectual curiosity. These programs will feature knowledge and skill acquisition through outstanding, innovative and experiential training to our students.
- To excel in research and discovery in the biomedical sciences to elucidate our understating of basic and fundamental biological concepts.
The department currently comprises 18 full-time faculty with a variety of interests ranging from cancer biology to cardiovascular science to microbial pathogenesis.
Faculty use a number of state-of-the-art approaches including those involving molecular genetics, cell biology, and structural biology in their quest to answer today’s most pertinent medical questions.
The Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology is one of the four basic science departments at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and was founded in the early 1920’s. The department as it currently stands represents a merger of the Department of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Department of Microbiology.
