UC Med Mentors Will Double the Number of Laptops Offered

UC Med Mentors Will Double the Number of Laptops Offered

Published: 12/8/2017

Medical students at the University of Cincinnati serving as mentors will be able to double the number of laptops they provide to local elementary school students thanks to two $10,000 grants from the Clare Family Foundation and faculty and staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
Mentors in the UC Med Mentor program will be able to offer 20 laptops this spring, says Charles Cavallo MD, president of the Med Mentors advisory board, instructor in the UC Department of Pediatrics and an alumnus of the UC College of Medicine. The laptops will be presented during an April 10, 2018 event at the UC College of Medicine.
"We are excited about our new grants,” says Cavallo. "Half of our funding will be used for more laptops while the remainder will support programming activities for our mentees.”
Med Mentors works with the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative (CYC) to link medical students with Cincinnati Public School children for mentorship. The effort was started in 2001 by Wan Lim, PhD, associate professor-educator of medical education emeritus. About 200 medical students are connected to roughly 200 CPS students.

At Interview Day, I felt like they rolled out the red carpet, and then I came back for Second Look, and it’s still the same—it’s not an act. I am getting to know more people and starting to feel more at home. UC really has a great community and everything I need to really excel.”
