Advanced Training - Fourth Year Requirements

Two Months of Acting Internship

The College of Medicine requires that every fourth-year medical student complete two months of Acting Internship (AI). The Acting Intern is given primary patient care responsibility on an inpatient service under the direction of first-year residents, senior residents and an attending physician. Students will partake in a 4 week training of Internal Medicine and 4 weeks of training from one of the following disciplines below:

  • Adult Psychiatry
  • Anesthesia
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Family Medicine
  • Gynecology
  • Neurology
  • Obstetrics
  • Pediatrics
  • Surgery

Twenty-Four Weeks of Electives

16 elective weeks must be UC College of Medicine electives done in Cincinnati. Students will have 4 weeks of Internal Medicine Selective (IM) IM Selective listing and 12 weeks of Intensive Clinical Experience (ICE) ICE Elective listings.

8 elective weeks of undesignated electives that may be taken outside of Cincinnati. All away electives must be approved by the appropriate UC elective director prior to taking the elective.
