Residency Programs

Applicant Information

A few important details: We accept applications only through ERAS. We participate fully with the NRMP. We have no minimum requirement for USMLE scores.

Letters of Recommendation:

We require four letters of recommendation. Preferably one of these is from a department chair, although this is not mandatory. Ideally the letters are from faculty who have seen your work and know you as an individual.

Letters of Invitation:

These are sent starting in October through the second week of November.

Interview Days:

We have a 1½ day interview, so that you are able to get an in depth look at our program and have lots of opportunities to interact with the residents. We interview most Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting in October through January. .

Accommodations and Dinners:

Since the second day trip can be expensive, we pay for lodging for Monday and Tuesday nights. You have dinners with the residents on Monday and Tuesday nights. If you have a spouse or partner accompanying you, they are most welcome at the dinners. Monday night is sponsored by the UC Department of Internal Medicine and takes place in one of the restaurants downtown. The Tuesday night dinner is at the home of one of the med-peds residents.

Second Looks:

We do not require second looks, since they are expensive and time consuming for our applicants. If you are passing through or are interested in experiencing something you did not get to see, you are most welcome to come back, but please do not feel obliged to do so for our sake.

Positions and Promises:

Lastly, our decision process is by committee, with the many people you meet participating. As a result, and because of the rules of the match, no one is offered a position, or promised a “high rank.” Please do not take this as an indication that we are not interested in you as an applicant, but rather that we feel this is ethical behavior.

Let me close this by saying that there is nothing so rewarding as working with the med-peds residents, and I hope you may be among them soon!
