Residency Programs

Generalist (Hospitalist and Primary Care) Curriculum

If you choose to go directly into practice as a hospitalist or primary care physician you will have to be ready on day 1 for this work. We have developed curriculum for both hospital medicine and ambulatory care that you can consider as a guide along the way.

Hospital Medicine Curriculum

The internal medicine core curriculum plus:

  • Participation as senior resident in hospitalist elective
  • Participation in at least 2 months on GIM consultation
  • Participation in at least 1 month of community hospitalist electives
  • Participation as team leader on Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Cardiology
  • Participation in Infectious Disease elective
  • Participation in the Hoxworth discharge follow-up clinic
  • Proficiency in central lines
  • Participation in ultrasound elective (under development)
  • Participation in billing coding and practice management seminars and training
  • Participation in the patient safety elective

Primary Care Curriculum

The internal medicine core curriculum plus:

  • Participation in a rotation in dermatology
  • Participation in a rotation in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery
  • Participation in at least two months of community practice elective
  • Participation in the Initiative on Poverty Justice and Health elective
  • Participation in the Hoxworth perioperative clinic
  • Participation in the Hoxworth women’s health clinic
  • Proficiency in injections of knee and shoulder
  • Proficiency in simple incision and drainage, and suturing
  • Participation in the core QI team during Long Block
  • Participation in billing coding and practice management seminars and training
