Department of Internal Medicine

Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology

About the Program

The University of Cincinnati Immunology/Allergy Training Program is a conjoint three-year training program with separate tracks for fellows board-qualified in internal medicine and pediatrics.

The internal medicine track is based in the UC Division of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and the pediatric track at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The program's mission is to train physician scientists for academic and/or research careers. A majority of funding is provided through a T32 training grant award from the National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Two years of intensive research training and laboratory investigation are required under the direct supervision of a faculty mentor.

The third year is devoted to clinical training that will satisfy requirements for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

Established in 1962, the fellowship has maintained a tradition of providing both strong clinical and research training. Cross training in pediatric and adult allergy is provided.

Active and innovative basic and clinical research is conducted in the areas of:

  • New therapies for asthma and allergic diseases
  • Mechanisms of occupational lung disease
  • Food hypersensitivity
  • Reproductive immunology
  • Eosinophil biology
  • Genetics of asthma
  • Experimental murine models of allergic disease
  • Chemokines and the role of cytokines in regulation of immune responses
  • Molecular biology

Separate clinical, basic and translational research tracks are offered including a molecular epidemiology program, which prepares fellows for conducting clinical and translational research.
