The Christ Hospital-Based Residency Program

Welcome to The Christ Hospital/University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency Program!

Our program is committed to teaching and training family physicians to become caring leaders and advocates of health care within the community. We are a community hospital program sponsored by The Christ Hospital, with many of our faculty coming from the University of Cincinnati. I am thankful to have such a dedicated group of faculty and staff who are eager to continue learning and share that excitement in their teaching as well. We also feature a unique combined five-year program in Family Medicine/Psychiatry. The FMP program, now in its 17th year, produces broadly trained physicians who have depth in caring for individuals with mental health problems. Family Medicine residents also benefit from this program and leave with confidence in behavioral sciences, applying what they have learned no matter what is their next endeavor.

One of our program’s goals is to tailor the training for each individual resident in anticipation of future practice setting and career goals. Our location in Cincinnati and our relationships within the health care community allow us to offer a unique, personalized training experience for each resident, complementing their passions and abilities. Our residents rotate through Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for inpatient pediatrics, emergency medicine, and specialty clinics. Cincinnati Children’s is a national leader and is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the Top 10 “America's Best Children’s Hospitals.” Few Family Medicine programs can boast of such training in leading adult and pediatric hospitals.

We have a longstanding commitment to care for under-served populations, both in Cincinnati, across America, and internationally. All of our residents have annual Global Health experiences that are covered by the program 100%. They also serve in the Cincinnati community in clinics for the homeless, refugees and local schools. The program seeks to instill in residents the responsibility that each family physician has to be involved with and render care in some way to these populations.

Cincinnati is a wonderful place to live! It has much to offer - cultural activities, collegiate and professional sports, an abundant parks system and a booming restaurant scene are just some of the exciting things that you will discover here. We enthusiastically invite you to consider our Family Medicine program for your residency training.

Best,

Christopher Bernheisel, M.D.
