Program Summary
The training programs in Epidemiology stress environmental, clinical, molecular, genetic, quantitative, and community epidemiology. Students are provided with the tools to plan and execute studies of various designs as well as analyze and interpret the results of their investigations. Students also have the opportunity to take courses in many of the various subspecialties of epidemiology such as cancer, cardiovascular, infectious disease, pharmacological, pediatric, and neurological. Courses are also available in other departments in the College of Medicine that can provide students with a further understanding of the basic biological processes underlying human disease. Students are strongly encouraged to apply their training to ongoing research projects conducted by departmental faculty, faculty from other clinical departments in the College of Medicine, and clinical researchers working in affiliated health care institutions.
While the Master’s and Doctoral programs are similar in a number of respects, we regard the Master’s program as an apprenticeship to the field as research support staff. Both the MS and PhD programs require that students propose and execute original studies that test hypotheses concerning risk factors for disease and/or approaches to disease prevention.
