Overview

The UC Department of Dermatology is a complex entity, comprising a multi-site dermatologic general and subspecialty practice, two affiliated but independent dermatologic patient care entities (Pediatric Dermatology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Section of Dermatology of the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

In addition, the department is home to three faculty research laboratories, a dermatopathology and immunodermatology laboratory and a university-based administrative unit.

Patient Care

Our department has 13 clinical faculty and five physician extenders who provide comprehensive clinical services to patients of all age ranges through UC Health. 

We serve private patients at six main locations, including, UC Health Physicians Office–Clifton, UC Health Physicians Office North–West Chester, UC Health Physicians Office–Midtown (Oakley/Pleasant Ridge), UC Health Physicians Office–Crestview Hills, UC Health Physicians Office–White Oak, and University Health Services (student health clinics on the main and medical campuses).

We provide satellite services at Maple Knoll Village retirement community.

Our faculty see patients at the VA Medical Center as well as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and we have a consult service at those two hospitals as well as University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

As part of our Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, our faculty oversee residents in outpatient clinics at the UC Medical Center, the VA Medical Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and at several of our main locations.

Education

There are 10 dermatology residents in our three-year residency program. We have one position for a Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology fellow. We offer elective rotations for third- and fourth-year medical students. There are currently two graduate students pursuing PhDs with dermatology faculty mentors.  There is an ACGME accredited Pediatric Dermatology fellowship offered at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Research

Our two full-time research faculty and their research associates and assistants provide sponsored research principally in the areas of the genetic susceptibility to melanoma and other aspects of melanocyte biology.

These faculty members are nationally and internationally known for their premiership in the study of melanocyte biology, especially in the important area of melanoma. They train future scientists through mentoring and research projects.
