Peer-to-Peer Support Programs

Peer-to- Peer Tutoring

The UC College of Medicine has a well-established and highly utilized Peer-to-Peer Tutoring program.

Second- third- and fourth-year medical students, as well as students from the MD/PhD program, serve as peer tutors for the first- and second-year medical students. Tutoring is offered in all of the basic science blocks.

The goal of tutoring sessions is to further explain and reinforce what was taught in lectures. Tutors are skilled at helping students identify key concepts and high yield material, as well as helping students to improve study skills and habits.

Tutoring is provided primarily in small group settings and is free of charge.

Students can check for small group tutoring sessions via the Medonestop portal. After logging in, go to "Quick Links" - “I want a tutor”. Tutors post sessions to the calendar by course and students can click on a session to sign up.

Email Carrie Martin at marti5cl@ucmail.uc.edu, Office of Student Affairs, UCCOM, if you have tutor program questions.

Peer Study Group

A peer study group can be an excellent way for a student to round out his or her study strategy. A well-organized and focused group allows for a multi-modal learning experience that can help solidify knowledge and increase comprehension of weaker areas.

It allows students to take on the roles of both teacher and learner while building interpersonal skills and collegiality.

The Office of Academic Success provides an outlet for students to find others who are interested in forming a study group. Interested students can sign up on MedOneStop

Teaching in Medical Education

The Teaching in Medical Education Course is a longitudinal course that begins in the spring semester of M1 and continues through the M4 year. Students are taught learning theory, pedagogy, collaborative learning techniques, and group facilitation. Peer teaching uses a Supplemental Instruction-type model. Students will engage in 80 hours of teaching activities between M1-M4 in order to complete the course.
