Academic Support & Counseling

Welcome to Academic Support & Counseling

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a designated office and an array of support services to assist medical students and help them achieve academic success.

As the African proverb begins, “it takes a village ...,”  and at the College of Medicine the village includes a full-time Assistant Dean for Academic Support, a full-time executive staff assistant, over 60 peer teachers, including a dozen MD/PhD students, and more than 250 faculty advisors and specialty counselors.

This dedicated team of individuals contributes to the formal education of medical students by monitoring, tutoring, supporting and advising medical students throughout the four years of medical school.

Individual Consultation with Assistant Dean

The Assistant Dean for Academic Support (ADAS) closely monitors students’ academic progress and is available for individual consultation with medical students interested in enhancing academic success for coursework and for the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.

The ADAS works with medical students and faculty to design opportunities for effective learning, teaching and evaluation.

For students who encounter academic difficulty, the ADAS problem-solves with students to discover the reason(s) for the difficulty.  Additional academic support services include consultation with faculty, peer-to-peer tutoring (group and individual), referral for psycho-educational testing and accommodations for written examinations in the case of learning disabilities.

Students can consult with the ADAS for a wide variety of reasons to learn more about academic support services available to them.
