HOST Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the HOST program available?

We have coordinated hosts in the following cities:   Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle, Houston, Denver, Ann Arbor, Raleigh-Durham, and New York.

Who are the HOST volunteers?

All hosts are UC alumni - they have attended the UC College of Medicine for their graduate medical education or attend the residency program and have volunteered to provide this service.

What is expected of the HOST volunteers?

We simply ask the alumni host to provide overnight accommodations in their home for the student. Although many hosts go above and beyond by offering transportation to and from interviews and airports, home cooked meals, guided tours of the area and invaluable professional insight on the regional medical community and your prospective medical center. Every HOST experience will be different and the students and alumni will benefit every time they use the program.

How long will a student stay with a HOST volunteer?

The timeframe varies from visit to visit. We have had some alumni host students for a week while the student completed several interviews in the region. Other alumni have hosted students for three days just so the student could get a better travel rate on a Saturday stay over flight. We will work with our alumni hosts to best suit the travel needs of the student.

How will the process be communicated to HOST volunteers?

After the student has completed the on-line registration the alumni affairs office will contact alumni and secure their interest and availability. The Alumni Affairs office will then provide the student and alumni with contact information and confirming details of the visit. It is then up to the student to contact their host within 48 hours, and share the details of their travel and interview plans. We ask the student to contact the alumni host as soon as they are given the information so the alumni know the student is definitely staying with them. If plans change, the student can always contact them again.

How will HOST volunteers be communicated with if a student’s plans change?

We understand that plans change – The student will contact their host as soon as possible and let them know about the change in plans. Also, they will inform the Office of Alumni Affairs, of the change. If they need to reschedule for that location, the Alumni Affairs office will work with the volunteer to see if the date change works or look for another alumni volunteer to host the student.
